OUR TAKE
Best fit: exploring cloud and self-hosted agent paths
Photon offers a useful range of starting points for a developer. The same range can make a prototype misleading if it runs on a shared number while the finished product promises one persistent identity. Write down the eventual production model before choosing the easiest first step.
Hosting is an architectural decision
The open-source path runs on your own Mac and account. Managed Free and Pro use a pool; Business supplies dedicated lines. The pricing page lists Free with ten users, Pro at $25 with 100 and Business at $250 per line. Unlimited Business users depend on Auto Scale, while a daily new-contact allowance is separately stated.
Validate the feature you will ship
The platform lists direct messaging, group messaging and newer iMessage features with tier distinctions. Confirm support for your specific recipient devices and account. A code example or platform feature matrix does not prove a given production line can perform every operation. Ask how fallback preserves the conversation identity used by your application.
Plan the maintenance boundary
Self-hosting leaves your team responsible for machine availability, account state and updates. Managed hosting changes that boundary but still requires application-level handling of timeouts, events and operator takeover. Test a reconnection scenario in the selected model. We have not deployed a Photon server or validated its managed reliability claims.
The decision in one sentence
Use Photon when its selected hosting path and sender identity suit the product, then test those exact choices rather than a convenient substitute.
