messages.dev / type the conversation

messages.dev exposes a TypeScript SDK, REST endpoints, HMAC-signed webhooks and an outbox tracking surface in its documentation. Outside the sandbox, recipients must message the line before you can send to them.

OUR TAKE

Best fit: a typed agent integration with contact-first behavior

This is a particularly relevant candidate for a TypeScript agent that answers an existing conversation. The documentation makes production direction an explicit constraint. Evaluate that rule before investing in a flow that needs to initiate messages to arbitrary phone numbers.

The documented primitives

The introduction identifies messaging, file uploads, native audio, contact cards, reactions, typing and receipts. It points to an outbox or sent event for tracking, and describes HMAC-signed incoming webhooks. The SDK is recommended and claims to provide typed errors, pagination and signature verification. Those descriptions warrant inspecting the actual package and current reference during implementation.

The sandbox differs from production

The docs describe pairing a phone to a sandbox number through an activation code. They explicitly say a recipient must message the production line first before a send is permitted. The homepage’s 50 free messages daily is a testing allowance, not evidence of an outbound production plan or an all-in production subscription.

A focused integration exercise

Use the documented outbox and incoming events to connect one business action with the provider’s records. Feed a repeated event into a test handler and verify that it does not repeat a downstream action. Check signature verification against the raw request requirements in current docs. Request number ownership, price and support scope separately; we have not exercised the SDK or measured event latency.

The decision in one sentence

Consider it for typed inbound agent journeys once the production contract and event reconciliation path are clear.
